Etudes Summit
November 3 - 4, 2011
Sofitel San Francisco Bay Area, Redwood City, CA

Welcome

We are pleased to announce the 4th Annual Etudes Summit!

The Summit is designed to bring the Etudes community together, many of whom have never met in person -- faculty, distance education directors, trainers, instructional designers, administrators, support staff, and practitioners from IT and other fields. We invite everyone interested in teaching, learning, and collaboration with Etudes or Sakai to join us, meet us, and experience our vibrant community.

Etudes members and non-members alike will appreciate and benefit from the interaction and exchanges.

Keynote & Program Topics

Dr. Elizabeth BarkleyDr. Elizabeth Barkley, Professor of Music at Foothill College, will kick off the Etudes Summit, on Thursday, November 3, 2011 with the keynote address:

"Terms of Engagement: Understanding and Promoting Student Engagement in the Online Classroom"

Concern over student engagement has become central to conversations regarding quality in higher education, but what does ‘student engagement’ mean? And once we know, how do we achieve it? This keynote will integrate theory, research, and practice to offer college teachers a dynamic model for understanding student engagement as well as ideas for promoting it in the online classroom.

Dr. Barkley is an educator, musician and author. She has received numerous awards, including being selected as a Carnegie Scholar in the discipline of music and the California Professor of the Year.

She is the author of several published articles and books, including Student Engagement Techniques: A Handbook for College Faculty; Collaborative Learning Techniques: A Handbook for College Faculty; At the Crossroads: The Multicultural Roots of America's Popular Music in America; and others.
